A world in one country, South Africa epitomises diversity, from its potpourri of people and languages, to its spectacularly varied geography. Fringed by a breathtaking coastline with powder white beaches, its heartbeat is the wilderness – pristine bushveld in the Kruger and Eastern Cape areas home to fabled wildlife, luxurious game lodges and remote camps. Starkly beautiful deserts and dramatic mountain ranges lie between Cape Town in the south and the country’s northern borders with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.  Wild flower plains stretch the western shoreline, dotted with quaint fishing villages, and the Garden Route ambles along the east coast, where humpback and southern right whales spout just offshore and great white sharks plumb the depths.

South Africa is renowned for its food and wine, and the Cape’s picturesque winelands of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch showcase rolling vineyards and white gabled farmhouses. Enduring the stony embrace of legendary Table Mountain, the city of Cape Town itself is buzzing with restaurants, bars and art galleries, including Africa’s MOMA – the newly opened Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art. Spend a few days beach hopping – from Clifton to Llandudno to Boulders with its colony of diminutive African penguins. Drive Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point, straddling the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Visit sobering Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison. Take the cable car up Table Mountain or hike up Lion’s Head for sunset.

Options in the ‘Mother City’ alone are mind-boggling. You could spend a lifetime exploring this country.
